چکیده

The trapping mechanisms for hydrogen isotopes in Al-X Cu (0.0 at. % < X < 3.5 at. %) alloys were investigated using thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), electrical conductivity, and differential scanning calorimetry. Constant heating rate TDS was used to determine microstructural trap energies and occupancies. In addition to the trapping states in pure Al reported in the literature (interstitial lattice sites, dislocations, and vacancies), a trap site due to Al-Cu intermetallic precipitates is observed. The binding energy of this precipitate trap is (18 ± 3) kJ∙mol (0.19 ± 0.03 eV). Typical occupancy of this trap is high; for Al-2.6 at. % Cu (a Cu composition comparable to that in AA2219) charged at 200 °C with 130 MPa D2 for 68 days, there is ca. there is 3.15x10 mol D bound to the precipitate trap per mol of Al, accounting for a third of the D in the charged sample.

Grain Boundary Oxidation in Iron - Based Alloys , investigated by 18 O enriched Water Vapour - The Effect of Mixed Oxides in binary and ternary Fe - { Al , Cr , Mn , Si } Systems

Selective oxidation experiments at 700 ◦C in binary and ternary iron-based model alloys containing Al, Cr, Mn, and Si were carried out. The internal oxidation behaviour along grain boundaries and inside ferrite grains was analyzed by LOM, SEM and ToF-SIMS. Oxygen isotope exchange revealed the location of fast diffusion pathways in the alloy. Numerical calculations of oxide distributions were co...

Surface effects of ordering in binary alloys

This article reviews the most important achievements in the studies of the compositional (chemical) and magnetic ordering effects in the surface region of single-crystal binary alloys with different bulk structures. These alloys include the non-magnetic and magnetic concentrated substitutional binary systems which have a tendency to ordering (Au–Cu, Cu–Pt, Fe–Pt, Co–Fe, Fe–Ni, Al–Fe, Al–Ni, Pt–...

CORROSION FATIGUE CRACK PROPAGATION AND INHIBITION IN Al-Zn-Mg-Cu VS Al-Cu-Mg/Li ALLOYS

Age-hardenable aluminum alloys used in aerospace structures are susceptible to environment assisted fatigue crack propagation (EFCP), limiting component durability and safety. The objective is to quantitatively understand EFCP and its inhibition for important aerospace alloys: 7075-T651 (Al-Zn-Cu-Mg), C433-T3 (Al-Cu-Mg), and C47A-T86 (AlCu-Li). EFCP is understood through the hydrogen embrittlem...

Study of the Mechanism and Causes of Pore Formation in Sr-modified Al-Si Alloys

The formation of microporosity in modified Al-Si alloys has been reviewed in the present study. A major concern in modification is the increased tendency to form microporosity in the macro-shrinkage free Al-Si alloy castings. It has also been demonstrated that at low hydrogen contents (0.1cc/ 100g, Al), where only shrinkage porosity should occur, the effect of Sr-modification on porosity conten...

Effect of Pt on Zn-Free Cu-Al Catalysts for Methanol Steam Reforming to Produce Hydrogen

Steam reforming of methanol can be considered as an attractive reaction aiming at hydrogen production for PEM fuel cells. Although Cu/Al-contained catalysts are considerably evaluated in this reaction, further evaluation is essential to evaluate the impact of some promoters like Pt in order to find a comprehensively optimized catalyst. Pt promoter is employed with different methods in this ...
